Privacy
Clan (formerly Family Location) is a private, self-hosted location-sharing app for you and your circle. This is a short, plain explanation of what it stores, how long it's kept, and who can see it.
What we store
- Your account — email, display name, and password. The password is stored encrypted ("hashed") and cannot be read by anyone, including the admin.
- Your device — a basic label (e.g. "Android Phone") and platform.
- Your location — latitude/longitude, GPS accuracy, and battery level, with a timestamp. While the app is installed and you're signed in, this is recorded automatically in the background (about every 30 seconds while you're moving, less often when still), creating a recent location history.
- A profile photo — only if you add one.
We do not collect your contacts, messages, call history, browsing, or any other apps or sensors.
Physical activity (Android): with your permission, the app checks whether your phone is still or moving, only to save battery by checking your location less often when you are not moving. This happens on your phone only: activity data is never stored, sent to the server, or shared. Clan has no health or fitness features.
How long we keep it
- Location history is automatically deleted after 30 days.
- Your account, name, and photo are kept until your account is deleted or you're removed.
Who can see your location
- People in the same circle(s) as you — they see your name, photo, and current/recent location.
- The administrator (the person who runs this app's server) can see all accounts, circles, and location history through an admin dashboard.
There is no advertising, and your data is never sold or shared with anyone else.
Where it's stored & other services
- Everything is kept on a private, self-hosted server run by the administrator — not a commercial cloud database.
- Android app: includes Google Firebase Analytics, which sends basic, non-location usage and device info (app version, device model, general region) to Google to help keep the app running. Maps are displayed using Google Maps.
- iPhone app: no analytics. Maps are displayed using Apple Maps.
Your choices
- Delete your account and all your data yourself, at any time: in the app (menu → Delete account) or on the web at clanlocation.com/delete-account. This removes your account, name, photo, devices and all location history immediately. Circles you own are deleted for everyone in them.
- While location sharing is on, the app shows a notification. Logging out or uninstalling the app stops all location collection.
